Is this newel support wrong?!

Hi everyone,

Some advice please! My builder has installed my staircase like this but it appears the newel post isn't notched and seated on the trimmer joist so I don't know what he has done.

The other strimmer is screwed into the wall but this side is free standing

If as seems the case the newel is not structural it should be ok so long as it is securely fixed to the rest of the structure
