Being briefed before going into a fight is one thing, that is a tick box excercise for the military to shift the blame onto you in the event it goes t***s up.

You do get briefed on the legalities and including your conduct as well as the relevant sections of the Geneva convention, when kills are registered you also undergo a debrief. It is very difficult for lawyers to determine war crimes let alone the average soldier, it is easier to simply follow orders as your CO is hardly likely to give you an illegal one knowingly. Everyone plays dumb.
