Issues Over Inspection

A colleague of mine is selling a house and decided to have an electrical inspection done. An electrician (with logos on van etc) duly attended, and said that in the kitchen, he would have to move all of the fitted appliances to check their wiring. So far, so good. However, after checking the wiring, the tradesman couldn’t get the appliances back so that the fronts lined up, didn’t / wouldn’t level the items (fridge, dishwasher), and having removed the kickplate, snapped in trying to get it back in. His view was that this isn’t his problem, that “if your electrics were accessible, it wouldn’t have happened” and that, generally, to make an omlette, eggs have to be broken.

Suggestions on ways to remedy this range from withholding payment, reporting him to his trade organisation / Trading Standards / Lynn Foldes-Wood, up to going round and smashing his house up to see how he likes it.

What is it REASONABLE to expect him to do, given that I suspect you won’t get a replacement kicker that matches directly (the kitchen went in a couple of years ago, came from a big shed and is therefore probably discontinued)?

What can she REASONABLY do by way of redress?

Is this level of behavior an accepted norm, and given that we will increasingly be at the mercy of the Worshipful Companies of Sparkhandlers, is it something we will see more of?
