What oil/varnish is best to use on an oak dining room table??? I want to keep its natural color but make it fairly hard wearing at the same time. Help anyone??

Agreed, wax is the best. I have been using the below product on mine for years available everywhere:

For what it is worth I have used Treatex Hard Wax Oil Ultra on my new oak kitchen work tops a few weeks ago and the results look very good.

Two normal coats each one lightly sanded and then a third coat with hardener added. The hardener makes the top surface very hard wearing. Left over wax formed a solid lump.

A small test area suggests it will resist most fluids and tools.
