Hi everyone,

Forum Newbie here... We recently moved into this house and frankly it's falling to pieces everywhere so we are planning to invest some time this Summer and give it some TLC.

I am German and not familiar at all with the DIY issues in old houses here, as well as the products used, so figured better to get some ideas first.

We're starting with the kitchen and there are 2 issues...

1. Where the cables from appliances have been touching the walls the paint has come off and I'm not sure what I am looking at underneath, but in any case it's powdering off and leaving dust across the surfaces. I want to repaint the whole kitchen, but have a feeling we may be running into some issues if we just slap paint on..

This area has actually gone bigger since I took the picture 2 weeks ago-ish.

2. The wall covering by the back door is cracking every where. I have attached some pictures of it, but I am not sure what they used to cover the wood around the door, but in any case it's falling off rapidly.

Any ideas on how to fix these issues would be much appreciated.

The socket damage should repair with a powder filler. Although you really need to address why it's worn like it has, gentle mechanical movement of a flex on a wall wouldn't normally cause the amount of damage seen in your picture.

Is the area wet due to kettle steam, water spillage or something getting damp (maybe from the other side of the wall?

It might just be a rubbish repair post someone chasing the cabling in to the socket.

The walls need professional work. No corner bead under the plaster suggests Cowboys at play, so to does the separation of board and plaster in picture two.

Without seeing face to face it looks to me like poor workmanship and mechanical damage from the door being roughly opened and slammed shut.

I'd be thing about taking it all back to frame and brick and re boarding and then skimming or tiling if appropriate,

Thanks hun,

We have been in here since July 2015 and the damage under the socket has been like that since we moved in. I don't know which appliances the previous owners had there, so could have been the kettle. It is an inside wall and it's the only place where the paint has come off like that. There is no other spot on the same wall that has any damage/bubbling of paint or anything and there is no feeling of dampness to the area. I just went to check it out a bit more and it's only underneath the right plug that the paint flakes off, under the left one it feels solid. So like you said, could have been a dodgy job.

I will try filling it before attempting any paint job. Which product would you recommend?

In regards to the door, it's a wooden door and it has been basically not shutting since it got cold, so we have been having to slam the door to get it to close at all, so good chance that that's shaken everything lose.

I thought it looked like someone had just popped plaster onto wood. Does it need to be covered at all? Couldn't we just take it back to the wood and seal and paint?

Overall from what I have heard the landlord has "family" who does "building work". When we moved in the floor in the dining room had sunk in one corner and all they did was drill a massive piece of wood into the floor to hold the floor up... no thinking about what the underlying issues are. The wallpaper is about to come off, every bit of filler that was done hasn't been sanded and painted with a different colour paint and the paint above the shower is also peeling. This house is one dodgy job :P
