ivy roots

hi this is my first post on here so if i get it wrong sorry>
i have spent 3 days pulling down 20 year old ivy from the garage wall.
but i am having problems getting the roots out.
any suggestions on how to kill them insitu without damaging the soil around

Several applications of a good weed killer like roundup, and then monitor the situation every few months.
