Join skirting at different heights at top of stairs

I have existing skirting on the stairs, and am wanting to put a higher skirting board around the top of the stairs, any tips on the best way to join these without such an obvious change in height?

Cut the existing off where it meets lip of the stairs and start the new bit from there with an angle on it so it looks as if it’s part of it. Once painted it will look like one piece.

Or do a mitre return on the new skirting, with a piece of skirting equal to its thickness, so it turns to the wall.
