skirting board dilema stairs-landing

cant figure out what happens when i try to fit skirting in my landing.
The strings on the stairs are finished with a quarter round moulding, but if I fit the landing skirt, then the skirting board is deeper than the string at the meting point of stairs to landing.
i've thought of just leaving a flat cut, and of cutting a mitre towards the external edge of the opening of the stairs, but i'm sure there must be a 'right' way and a 'wrong way'.
