Hi, not sure if this post is better here or in the woodworking secion, thought I'd start here as it is to do with the stairs!

The diagram below is a top down view of the landing on the 2nd floor of our house:

Originally there was wood panelling from floor to ceiling each side of the stairs where the green is on the diagram. This was removed as part of a refurb to let more light in.

The black posts are staying and go from floor to ceiling. Everything in green and red is theoretical and not yet in place.

I need to fit a bannister with spindles etc to make it safe and wan't to make sure I do it properly. The question is will the handrail be secure enough if i cut it at 45 degrees in order to make it turn 90 degrees to then connect up with the existing posts?

I hope this makes sense, I'd be grateful for any pointers....

Vic - you say you want to fit spindles ... where are these going to be fixed at their bases as you seem to be positioning the handrails 'beyond' the staircase width. Most bannister/spindle combos are usually within the the width of the staircase. If you do this then fit the handrail to the up-facing surface of the existing (black) posts and the spindles to the staircase treads. Or am I missing something???
