Hi, i am designing a new house, the joist level does not match with block courses. Do i show a "cut block" below and start with a full block above or does the coursing remain the same with a cut block below and above?
I don't think that you need to show anything. There is no need to draw to that level of detail, all that matters is the joist height, and then the joist bearing details - ie bearing on the wall or hung off hangers
Normally (assuming 200 or 220 joists) you would drop a full block in between the joists and start the coursing from there. Gob the bits on top of the joists up with mortar
Remember to allow for the coursing for the tie wires
But depending on the lintels used and opening layout, as the head height of the lintels do not work block courses (it works about 75mm cut) it may be better to have any cuts lower down and then run full blocks around to get the joist height. This is especially true for Catnic lintels.
But bear in mind the need to seal properly around the joists to prevent air leakage. So it may be better all round to hang the joists off hangers - then you save on the time messing about infilling the joists
Thanks for replies. I think i get it! I don't normally go into this much detail but the chap i am drafting for wanted to impress the client more than anything! and asked me to show a full section with coursing etc shown. I have gone with the idea of just cutting a block beneath the joist hanger and above it so that between the joists i have a full proper coursing of the blocks? Does that make sense???
Thanks again everyone, i'm sure i'll be back with more questions!!!! What is everyones background/profession?
