Hello all,

I am looking to extend my ring main for the upstairs of the house by adding two new sockets into the ring main. The problem i am having is that this is a new house and so i am struggling to pull the cable back from one socket and run the new one to it as it seems to be clipped behing the walls. My question is can i use 30 amp junction boxes for this. I know how to do it but i keep reading that this is no longer allowed?

Thanks

Yes you can, but the junction box has to be accessable, the sticking point is, is under a carpet accessable? no one can decide

Great thanks Adam. I will be working in the loft with the junction boxes, so presumably as long as i don't floor over the boxes this would be ok? Also think i read somewhere not to put the insulation on top of them in case of heat build up?? Is this the case?

thanks
Trevor

Yes, loft is fine for a junction box, screw them to a joist nice and visible, don't cover with insulation (this actually applies to the cables themselves, but if you have the cable clear, then the boxes will be...)

If you do floor over one, just make sure a smallish section of the loft floor can be lifted to gain access to it, and write something on the board to indicate that there is a junction box below

Yes, but it may be a bit bumpy when you come to hoover....
