Just how bad is this?

Had a carpenter round last night to look at the flat roof. He was also less than impressed. Said he would have to work on the steel to get it flat and fill in all the empty mortar joints before putting the timber against the house.

Him and the brickie are hopefully going to take both steels out and do it properly. You know, like it should be done.......

I would not pay the other builder particularly quickly. Get photographic evidence, and for now just play hard to get, or if you want to, withhold a sum suitable to pay the other team for the remedial work. Problem is without formally giving builder #1 a chance to rectify, you're on slightly dodgy ground. If the sum is not huge, it might be worth just paying it and getting him off your back

My 1st concern would be are there pad-stones for the ends of the steels? I couldn't see any, but the whole job is so messed up it is impossible to say from the photos.
