Please!!! Does anyone know of a good solution or just an idea that I might try to prevent birds from flying into my window panes...it absolutely has me stumped as to what to do about it. It is a one story ranch style house and the windows are approx 3 feet wide and 6 feet long..i havent actually measured them...but the panes themselves are not divided. I have found three dead already with their little necks broken..and at least several times a day, I hear the dreaded thud of one hitting the glass...and the little telltale signs of pin feathers on the glass. Is there something I can hang in the window?...it wouldnt be practical for bars (I can hear the joke now) to be used...any suggestions at all!

Use black - removable - stickers on your windows. I've seen large windows backing on gardens where they used "Swallows" for this. Quite effective too.

Not sure what it is called, but remember in your childhood times you could stick plastic figures onto car windows? These stickers are made of the same material

[Symptoms]

bett - the reason they do this because they see, reflected in the glass, a landscape and so think it's OK to fly on. The only solution is to interrupt/disrupt this reflected scene by use of stickers ... these can be 'child' warning stickers (white stripes, dots, etc ... the type of thing found on glass doors in commercial buildings) or predator profiles (as per holmslaw's post).

Curtains (what you call drapes) or blinds don't work 'cos the birds can still see a reflected landscape.

I believe the hawk-shaped silhouette stickers are very effective. you can also hang hawk silhouettes outside the window, made of black plastic or card

I've got a large plastic owl which keeps them off the thatched roof. Bought it from a farm supply store. Its quite realistic looking. You need to change its position now and then.

Try hanging two or three CDs/DVDs in front of the window.
People use them as bird-scarers in fruit trees so it may work with your large window.

what a good idea...I never thought of that (obviously)...I.ve seen what you are speaking of...on large sliding doors so that young children dont run into them...its certainly worth a try...very upsetting to hear that "sound". Thanks to all for your replies!
