So the return of the punt would mean all trade ceases with the UK?

Erm no, how ever did you come to that conclusion? As you well know, or perhaps you dont? If the Irish economy were to fail trade with Ireland would also fail , this would have a massive impact on the UK economy, why else would the UK help to bail out Ireland? What, do you think the UK government would just hand over a bundle of cash for nothing?

What makes you think pulling out of europe will lead to the Irish economy failing?
The eu have bled you dry and now to cap it all the young people have a ball and chain of debt for the next 50 years or so.
Since ascension only 67 billion gained from the eu and over 100 billion (Source - sinn fein) euro's worth of fish stolen from your waters and now you have to swallow your pride and go cap in hand to the UK.
Yeah thats real smart alright. If I'd been running the country the roi would still fish its own waters and Irish fishermen wouldn't have to arrive back into port and dump millions of fish into the Irish sea to rot to satisfy their eu imposed quotas.

I dont , what gives you that idea? If anything it may have stopped the Irish economy from going down the tubes.
