The ceiling light in my bedroom had not been working for awhile so I decided to change the light switch and the ceiling light. However, after installing them fuses continually were blowing (still use screw fuses). I unwired everything and just capped off the wires and made sure nothing was touching but fuses keep blowing or they are screwed in but there is no voltage coming through, as I tested with the voltage detector. What could the problem be?

You might have connected the ceiling fitment, or the switch, or both, incorrectly.

Since cable colours and wiring conventions are going to be different, our "for reference" section might not help you much.

Sometimes the colours used in a switched light do not mean what that colour usually means.

when you put up the new switch or (more likely) the new fitting did you use fixing screws ? These could have been screwed into the cable feeding the switch or light fitting hence blown fuses
