We generally go running via the back door and with a new garden gate, I was thinking a Keypad would be better, as one less key to carry.

Most seem to be one sided, so buttons to get through, but a handle to let you out.
So not really secure if they jump over the fence and open it.

I know I could have a bolt and combination padlock, with a hole cut through the gate so I can access from either side, however looking for something a little smarter.

I tried a search and and found back to back codelocks might be the type of thing you're looking for. Some seem to be for fitting into a normal door but you might be able to modify the spindle length or something to suit a garden gate.
