Kingston 1 GB thumb drive -- no "removable disk"

The manual says simply hook into a USB port, and that thereafter Data Traveller II Plus will be displayed in the "My Computer" utility as a "Removable Disk."

Well, this isn't happening. Please advise asap!

What operating system? Any lights on the drive, do they light up? Are you plugging it into a powered USB socket? Have you got your USB enabled in BIOS - does you USB work with anything else? Have you tried the USB drive on another machine?
