We want new flooring in the kitchen and bathroom. The kitchen floor is concrete (it's an extension) with some temporary carpet tiles on top. Bathroom is floorboards with a cheap bit of carpet on top. We're thinking of something decent, like Amtico, but it's pretty expensive. Can anyone recommend something as good but cheaper ?

Next problem is the stopcock which was outside the back door, a couple of feet underground, before the kitchen extension was built by the previous occupants. We can now access it from a small trapdoor, situated about where you stand at the sink. We never need to turn off the mains water but I guess it wouldn't be wise (or even legal ?) to cover it with fixed flooring which we couldn't remove in an emergency. Any ideas and help welcome !

you've got various options: wood-engineered (not solid wood flooring in kitchens or bathrooms: too moist) or cork flooring (not the normal brown stick-on tiles) in various colours and textures.
