Kitchen unit side panels: painting tips

I am doing a cheapo kitchen refurb -- replace unit doors + worktops.
But the existing side panels of the units are beige. I want to paint them white. Do I need special paint + primer for this, or will normal gloss paint be OK.
The unit side panels are chipboard with laminate (melanine?) coating.
