I've just taken on a house which is infested with Mare's tail. The neighbours have it too, so a long term infestation is most probable. The back garden was paved, then tarmac was added over the top, but so thinly it is almost see-through! I have no more historical information. There is a clear rectangular pattern to the weed's location, confirming that it's pushing through the tarmac between the flagstones.

3 weeks ago I cleared the heads of the Mare's tail by scraping with a shovel, then sprayed SBK glyphosate weedkiller over the surface. I know now that what I did was wrong, and I should have sprayed the leaf surfaces, so that was a waste of time and chemical.

Last weekend the Mare's tail had re-emerged, and was basking in the sunshine at about 8" tall. Having educated myself a little on the action of glyphosate I simply sprayed these new heads with SBK in one area, and another glyphosate weedkiller called Doff in another area... I await the results.

Today I ordered some Kurtail Evo and Kplus+ to go with it (it's supposed to enhance its euthanistic qualities), and that will be used on whatever is left in two weeks.

I invite comments from those familiar with using Kurtail Evo and Kplus+ as to its efficacy on this nasty bas*ard of a weed.

Cannot comment of Kurtail but I have had some success with SBK Brushwood killer over the last two years.
I have a largish patch of Mares Tail coming up on my front garden, it comes from my neighbour but he aint that bothered about it so last year I tries SBK mixed up in a slightly stronger dose that advised. After waiting for the Mares tail to reach a decent height, I hit it with the SBK.
Within a couple of days it had all wilted over and after a few weeks it was dead, this year the patch definately seems thinner so i have repeated the process. Only time will tell I suppose, until my neighbour does something about it I am just going to have to live with it but at least the SBK seems to be having some effect and it beats pulling the things out by hand.

Order some professional strength glyphosate from amazon or ebay.

Rosate, gallop are trade names.
