Ladder: using safely on slopes

I want to go up the ladder and inspect the fascia boards etc. on the gable end of my bungalow.

Problem: The lawn slopes sharply from right to left; I can't see any level bits to place the ladder on.

Whats the safe way to use a ladder on sloping ground -- dig out a level section?

If you search on the net there is a product called ladderm8 (laddermate) its pricey but designed for such appilcations. If your'e clever you can probably figure out how to make your own version.
