Hi peeps, i have removed a gas fire and brick hearth from my fireplace and will be installing a modern 'all in one' style one. I'm not sure whether i should lay the laminate wood flooring first and go all the way up to the wall, then sit the new fireplace etc on top OR fit the fireplace first and cut the flooring up to it leaving the need for nasty edge trimming?

I'm hoping that answer a is acceptable so it can look nice and neat although any advice welcomed... maybe if i cut it just under the new hearth?

Regards,

Joel.

What do you mean by "all in one style", do you mean a fire that is purely decorative?

my bad, that was a really bad way of explaining! all i mean is, rather than having just a brick hearth with a gas fire sitting on it, it would be more like this...

but it will be a working gas fire, not just decorative.

If the fire is capable of any appreciable heat output, you should not lay wood flooring under the hearth. There are specific Building Regulations covering the construction of hearths & proximity of combustible materials & you may be in breach of the regulations; certainly would be as far as a solid fuel or wood burners are concerned. Advise you check & always follow the manufacturer’s installation instructions regarding combustible materials.

Nice pic !!

But the surround/hearth should be laid on a solid foundation (concrete etc ) and not a floating lamininate floor. Fit the hearth first then lay your floor. You will need a scotia type or flat beading for the hearth as you will have an expansion gap here.

The manufacturer of the fire wouldn't want to spoil this pic by showing you this..
