lamps occasionaly blow

..but only when the switch is turned on..kitchen diner area ,the arrangement is 6 lamps at 60 Watts with 1 switch switching 3 lamps and another switch switching the other 3
I looked at what the lighting arrangement was in the rest of the downstairs rooms and hallway and I added up about 600-700 Watts which is protected by a 6amp MCB so it wouldnt appear to be an overload

Would a 2 gang dimmer switch be more appropriate bearing in mind this is reported to only happen when switched on ?

You don't say what sort of lamps these are?
How often do they blow
Are you using a decent make (Philips/Osram etc) or are you buying the cheapest you can find?

They will tend to go at switch on as that is when the filament is cold, a dimmer with a soft start feature may help.
