novice so please be gental,dell laptop 2 days ago started turning its self back on after logging off ,only outher previous issue is have spells when i get a message stating internet explorer has stopped working, any ideas ,thanks

Just to clarify do you mean logging off or shutting down ?
What operating system are you running e.g. XP, Vista ?
Windows 7 has a scheduler for maintenance tasks. This can turn on the computer in the middle of the night. You can turn the scheduler off or simply unplug the PC from the mains. (I leave the battery out of my laptop).
A typical PC will use about 4W when turned 'off'. A typical laptop might use 2W when turned off. (My laptop uses 1W on standby and 2W when turned off.)
