It's just occurred to me that over 6 months later I never updated you all on what I went for!
Rover 620Si, big enough to be comfortable
and (legally) fast, but insurance a reasonable enough £589.20 fully comp . Only getting 26mpg however 
Still miss the Xantia though and will be looking at Citroens again when the time comes to upgrade - the Rover was a bit of an impulse buy as it came up at the right time and the right price from a colleague at work.
