Lasting repair

I need to repair a split that runs around the main body of a flat-roof where the mineral felt meets up with the shingle. Can anyone recommend a quality trowel-on/paint-on, permanent repair compound? Do I need to patch over it first with strips or just paint it on?
Any suggestions would be very handy. Thanks.

Available at most builders merchants.
