Lath and plaster ceiling / new light fittings

I did mine but i had plasterboared over them in the frst place. I had to get in the loft and break away the lath from around the hole (cut with a hole saw attached to a drill). I had to make sure that the insulation was removed around the hole to a distance of 150mm. A spark I know mentioned that you normally use 'witches hats' to protect them but only if between floors i.e. not in the loft...
