Just been searching the forum regarding laying a hearth and people seem to be saying to lay it on a bed of sand/cement for levelling purposes. However if the hearth lays level anyway I was wondering whether I can just fix it in place with something like no nails or some other type of adhesive. Or is there a good reason why sand/cement would be better.

Thanks for any input.

if the substrate is masonry or concrete, then i would use sand/cement mortar.
it adds a weighty fixing to the hearth, and with weight comes reassurance. ;)

wetting the substrate first is a must.
