Hi
I am looking for some professional advice re the following:

I am about to move into a flat and have acquired a marble hearth the back marble part together with the actual pine fire surround. I shall be using an electric type stove which is not very heavy.

The flat has a sound concrete floor and in the event that I may move in the future I want to keep the installation simple so that I can remove it without to much trouble.

Should I lay the hearth on a base of sand and cement or any other material which anyone could recommend. So that the surround will clear the skirting board I would have to raise the hearth about half and inch would this be acceptable.

Someone has suggested just laying the hearth direct onto the carpet but I am sure that this would be frowned on.

Any guidance/advice would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks.

You could fix hearth to 12-15mm ply or mdf with a little sealant and just lay on top of carpet, there will be no downward heat transfer and you can just pick it up when you go.
