Hi all,

I am redecorating living room. Should my wooden fire hearth go on top of the new carpet that is fitted or should it go directly on the floorboards with the carpet fitted around it?

Its one of the pine ones with the thin slot in marble effect panels.

Thanks
Dan

If I'm not mistaken any open fire should have at least 30cm non-burning material in front and beside it (tiles etc).

Dan, When you say 'hearth' aren't you getting confused with the 'fire surround?'
A 'hearth' in basic terms is a slab of heat-resistant material which is fitted around or below the fire place/fire, generally - Granite, Marble or similar.

Your wooden 'fire surround' should sit upon the 'hearth' then fixed to the wall.

Back to your original question, you could place the hearth on top of your carpet as this would give you the option of having a smart fitted carpet, should you decide to go for a modern wall mounted fire.

Alternatively, why not dispense with the rather 'dated' wooden fire surrounds and fit a 'floating' shelf/mantle piece? the ones with hidden wall mountings.
