Laying a membrane which will partly be covered in gravel and partly bark separated by roofing baton. Does the membrane need to be pulled totally tight when putting the pegs in?

How close to the edge do u pull it?

The roofing baton is also not level. There must be some high bits on the middle. Is it a case of smoothing those out?

I would try and get it as tight and smooth as possible without going to extremes.
You'll have to support your baton with some stakes so lay this out and make sure you can get the baton level first.

Is it the case that to get the ground as level as possible u need to lay the batons on the ground to check the level then rake some soil about until the batons are flat before putting down membrane?
