Laying a patio/drive

Hi
Im looking at redoing my driveway and making a patio in my garden. I’ve been looking at how to do this on the internet and asking people too.

My plan is hire a man with a digger to clear it all out and then I do the rest of it.

I just wondered what people advice was on here about what to lay for the base and if they would use cement for the flags or not.

Also the British weather....how much does rain affect driveways and laying them??
