Laying brick path across lawn- what base?

I want to lay a brick path across a lawn, the bricks are paving bricks, the end result can look quite rustic!

I’m going to dig down 150mm, (the bricks are 60mm deep); lay and level (and tamp) base material, then lay the pavers, finally finishing with brushing dry ‘mortar’ mix between the pavers, then damping.

My questions are:
Just sharp sand underneath? Or mixed with something cement like?

I want the end result to look a bit like the picture.
