Hi everyone,

I'm thinking about getting some Bexhill Clay pavers from here https://www.chelmervalley.co.uk/paver-brick/brick-pavers/bexhill/

I have never laid pavers before but would like to lay a path very similar to the one in the attached photo:

The pavers are 200mm x 58mm x 48mm and I will be laying on the 200x48 face so they will be 58 high and 48 wide. I want to start planning the layout but need some advice on how to plan. I'd like to lay them with as small a gap as possible Do I assume that there will be no gap in between or assume a small gap, say 2mm between?

Looking the photo there are 12 pavers next to a 600mm slab so that equates to just over a 2mm gap.

I guess it's a matter of laying some out and seeing what works but I just wanted some sort of plan before starting.

Many thanks,

Ed

Last house we had them laid for us, they used a wacker plate and whole drive levelled before they started to lay the first brick. They had cutters to cut the bricks, and a few people laying them so all done in the day.

But here the area was already concreted, a wacker plate would do nothing, I am laying myself, nothing to cut bricks, the gaps between house and path filled with slate, the path is better than it was, no pools of water to walk in before going into the house, but the finished result is no where near what the pros did.

The blocks are not clay, so they are uniform, and there are bits on the blocks to ensure even gap, once the sand is brushed in does not look too bad, but they have settled and needed to lift and relay one or two. To get a good result I would have needed to have used far more sand, and it would have taken a lot more work.

On dad's old drive the ground work was not good enough, it may have been OK to walk on, but with a car over the years we got two ruts where the ground under the bricks has moved. It may have been due to cleaning the drive with a pressure washer, but more likely not compacted enough to start with.
