When laying the final cut floor, does it need gluing across the entire floor area, can i use spray, do i need to trowel/spread adhesive, or will gluing the edges only suffice?

When you say vinyl do you mean cushion floor sheet vinyl?
..if so normal practice is to loose lay it.
using any type of adhesive will cause considerable damage to your sub-floor should you ever need to lift it or change it.
Fitters usually use an odd tactful piece of double sided tape but even that is rare

The room is 8.63m/3 and yes I believe its the cushioned vinyl...
