laying T & G boards

I know there's loads of answers on here somewhere but can't find the one I need! The room is 2.4m long, the boards are 2m long, is it OK to end up with a 0.4m long part of a board at the end? I'm sure I've heard that any board has to be long enough to span 3 joists and I'm not sure 0.4m is long enough?
