We have had the kitchen extended and so part of the floor is concrete (laid in March 2010) the old part is tiles (marley or such like usually laid in old council houses). we intend laying hardboard over the whole area and then putting the vinyl tiles onto the hardboard. The questions we have are : how can the hardboard be fixed to the concrete and is this the right way to do it ?

Hardboard is the wrong choice.

You need a liquid dpm (damp proof membrane) and a levelling screed if you want it to look right and last. A pro job i think.
