The paving slabs have been in situ for years .

The slabs are heavy duty 2 x 2 and may or not have a dpm laid beneath.

What action should be taken to prevent damp rising through the joists via the slabs.

you could nail some dpc to the joist bottom before fitting. use galvanized clout nails.

if there is any chance of water getting under the shed and lying on the slabs, you need to raise the joists so they are not in contact and it cannot get over the top of any dpm you use.

He didn't. He said joists on paving slabs. Do you think it's decking? Cellar floor?
