Hi guys - me again, in need of your help please.

Renovating a terraced house. Ripped out the steel bath, to find that the waste is lead pipe. Unfortunately the pipe runs through a gable end pitched roof, and thence to a hopper, so it's a bit involved to simply rip out the lead pipe and replace with 40mm plastic. Before I go taking the roof tiles off, can you tell me that there is an easy way to mate 40mm plastic to the old lead pipe ?

Thanks in advance.

yeah you want a McAlpine 40mm straight coupling.(White Compression type fitting)

A 40mm compression fitting will only fit 32mm/1¼" lead pipe due to the thicker walls of lead. If you have 40mm/1½" lead you may have a problem. See if you can get 50mm/2" compression fittings - I think Mcalpine do them. What is the outside diameter of the lead?

I think you may have to use a Fernco rubber tube with jubilee clips to slip over each pipe.

They are rarely used although they are a very good engineering solution. perhaps this is because they are only stocked at the Plumb Centre as far as I know.

Very useful solution and that place has a full kit of all the smaller sizes which is a good investment for anyone doing that kind of work.
