Leak from basin waste trap

Fitted a new basin waste and it's driving me mad trying to stop a leak from where the old trap meets the new waste.

I've attached a photo. The leak is coming from the underside of the right hand side of the trap nut - I've placed my screwdriver in the position. The trap doesn't sit square to the waste - would that be the problem? If so, how do I solve it?

I've added ptfe tape to the waste thread - still leaks.

Should I try a new trap? But I suspect it still won't be square to the waste.

1. You shouldn`t need to use PTFE tape on that joint
2. There should be rubber sealing washer on the end of that new section of pipe which gets compressed when the nut is tightened by hand and seals the joint.

Yes there is a rubber seal. But maybe it's old and new one needed?

Yes, they can get over compressed and mis-shaped. Trick is getting new ones, you can get them but usually shipping costs more than the seals. As suggested PTFE should not need to be used, if it leaks then chances are the seal needs replaced.

One thing to check too, make sure that the trap actually fits inside the new waste, it has been found that some wastes have a slightly smaller diameter and the trap doesn't fit inside the waste properly. May be easier just to get a new trap.

Seem to have sorted it. Loosened up the nut at the back of the trap, which allowed me to straighten the u bend up enough to get a better seal.

Thanks for your help.
