You can only learn, by doing. The more you do, the better your understanding, and the more confidence you gain.

And then replace just the O ring rather than the whole brass valve?

I don't see why not. If you leave the valve in situ and unscrew the innards, hold the valve body in a Stillson or something to avoid putting stress on the pipes. If you can't do that, take the valve off and put in a vice to dismantle. Put silicone grease on the O-ring.

Certainly worth doing, if you have access to suitable O rings, as a spare for next time, but for a quick fix, I would just nip to the plumbers merchant, with the photos, and the sample to find a match.
