First of all- i'm not sure whether this question falls under plumbing, or appliances, so please smack me on the nose if i am in the wrong place. This is hopefully a very quick, stupid question, but my landlady has informed me that i'm to try to fix it myself, rather than have her drive down from birmingham.

My broken washing machine was replaced about two weeks ago, with a secondhand hotpoint. At the time, the landlady cautioned me that the waste water pipe did not fit as tightly as the old one. And, consequently, there is now a leak where the grey waste water pipe meets the part connecting it to the u-bend beneath the sink, giving about a pint of water every cycle. So- have patience with a young man- how do i stop the leak!?

Thankyou.

I don't mean to sound dense, but there is no joint to tighten- neither of the connections are threaded. i think it's really just a matter of the connection being too loose- does that imply that i need a different waste water pipe, or the "other" part?

Thanks again.

if you dont know ask, no i dont think you are being dense.

you mentioned u bend thes have lockable nuts, is it these that leak?

or have you a spiggot?

(spiggot is if you will, a carrot shapped thing sticking out the side of a pipe)

in light of that, i do believe i have a spiggot- the tapering end of the carrot being that which slots into the grey water pipe- and this is where the water is actually leaking from.

have you tried a jubilee clip?

You put the clip on the hose then put the hose on the spiggot and tighten the clip

ok its not a w/m hose but you get the idea

get one from any diy shop or shed, bike or car place

ps, i hate spiggots

they are inclined to trap fluf that will attract more fluf then block (but as you are renting.......

That's great! i have tried nothing so far, bar a small pot to collect the water.. but that's seems precisely what i'm after- an inexpensive fix to float me to the end of my tenancy. thankyou, sir, for your prompt responses and pinpoint knowledge.

Thanks-

Jamie

my pleaseure.

sorry about the "technical" description of spiggot, but ot worked

hence forth all spiggots shall be called carrot shaped thing
