Hi

According to the installation handbook which came with my Grant oil fired boiler the bottom of the oil tank, supplying the boiler, needs to be 1.125m above the burner if a 10mm OD ( 8mm ID ) pipe is used in a single pipe gravity fed system. The pipe length is approximately 25m.

I want to keep the tank as low down as I can without affecting the operation of the boiler and still use gravity feed.

In order to lower the tank I could use 15mm OD pipe, however when I spoke to a local supplier they told me that they only ever supply 10mm OD pipe and set the bottom of the tank so that it is about 150mm above the burner.

Has any one got any comments ? Should I look to use a larger OD of pipe such as 15mm ?

In practical terms, 12 inches will be quite enough height (it's more than some ever get), and 10mm will be more than enough. If you want to go to extremes, there are some top outlet figures using 6mm pipe, which IIRC can be used for 80m.

Grants info comes from Riello, and since they sell to markets that use 35 sec oil, it MAY have something to do with that.

I often use 6mm pipe.
