leveling a toilet

Hi all

I'm in the process of replacing the downstairs toilet.

I've tiled the walls, put new flooring down, and now i'm putting the new toilet in!

I'm having trouble leveling the toilet pan and the cistern ( its a close coupled one)

when the pan is level the cistern isn't. When I screw the cistern to the wall making sure it's level ( front to back), it's front bottom edge lifts off the pan.
So what am I supposed to level to what?

How tight should the cistern be against the wall?
Can I just pack it out with some pieces of wood (10mm to 15mm ish)

I've had to fit and extension piece ( off-set coupler) on to the toilet pan outflow to reach the soil pipe ( the p shaped toilet coupler) is that ok? - putting two couplers together?

And just to put a bit of pressure on my parents are down at the weekend!

Don't worry too much if the cistern isn't level front to back - the most important bit is to ensure that it sits on the pan and forms a watertight seal - check the doughnut is in place and that the flush mechanism is watertight (nothing more frustrating than having to take it all apart again!)

OK to pack out from the wall using timber if needs be although not the neatest solution - can you not use a shorter pan connector to bring the pan nearer to the wall?

When securing the cistern to the wall don't forget to ;

1) Go easy and don't overtighten the fixings
2) If needs be put a washer and rubber washer between the screw head and the cistern ie wall/cistern/rubber washer/washer

If you can avoid using two pan connectors then do - more joints to leak and more possible obstructions.
