Levelling a wooden floor that has a concrete/stone doorstep

We want to re-carpet our living room. However in one corner we have the concrete/stone doorstep which at the moment creates a ridge under the carpet , and also we have the same problem around the hearth. (Hope that makes sense!!)

How do we go about levelling the floor before getting the carpet fitters in? Some kind of board?

Hardboard or ply to the level required (assuming the fireplace and door threshold are the same height above the floor)
