Just started doing up our breakfast room and the wife decides she wants ceramic tiles for the floor.

Pulled up the existing carpet to find vinyl tiles underneath, after consulting various posts on this site, decided that I could tile over the vinyl ones, until i decided to pull one up to check security. After pulling up the rest I now need to level the existing concrete floor.

I know the floors need to be free from grease, oil, dust etc how much of the old adhesive do i need to get up (cause it's a nightmare). The concrete is covered in black bitumen paint. Are you able to put a levelling compound, latex or otherwise, on old (very sticky) adhesive.

May sound a silly question, but i'm new to this floor laying game.

Hi Judderman

you need a levelling compound , for concrete substrate..
most builders merchants will recommend a good product ...mix spread an level
sorry its basic but thats what it is ...
hope this helps :)

Cheers Moz

I'll get myself up to Wickes then.

I'm guessing by your reply that I can leave the old adhesive down but make sure the floor is clean etc
