LG rh177 recorder and samsung tv problem

hi i have an lg rh177 recorderbut am having problems when i try to record to it when i set the timer to record with the tv on ( and then turn the lg off ) it starts up on time and records ok. but when i do the same again and turn the tv off it records only a blank screen what am i doing wrong?
i am using a samsung plasma tv model ps42c45ob

Setting the recorder to the wrong channel? AV sourced from the TV rather than the Freeview channel from the recorders own tuner.

Or there's some two way communication feature set by default that's lousing things up.
