Have moved into a new house with a Liff combi-flo fitted to the boiler. It has not had new crystals installed for 3 years, so got new ones. Took the top off the unit and it's full of a solid white sludge and the bottom drain is blocked. How can this be cleaned out without having to disconnect the whole unit, or do I have to get the spanners out?

Thanks Mick. Am I going to have to do this every year when I put in new crystals, or has it silted up because it has been left so long?

The "crystals" are balls of the polyphosphate!

In water they seem to form a white paste.

I suspect the problem results because the flow through the unit has been ceased by that blockage.

They should be removed and replaced every year. Its a good idea but few homeowners bother!

They are only needed in very hard water areas. Not in London!
