Hello. I want to run a single cable from a CU in the garage to a switch and directly on to a single light. What switch do I need please?

It will depend on your garage

it could be as shown, or laid out like one's living room. What water, insect, ingress can be expected, my integral garage has same switches as the house, my dad's outside garage had switch more like this

so need to know a lot more than it's a garage.

Others may disagree, but I think that if you need to ask what sort of switch you need, you probably shouldn't be working inside your CU.

Does the garage have an electricity supply?

Better option is to take the supply off an existing light fitting/switch or socket.

How many spare ways are in the consumer unit? If you got a spare you can get an electrician to add another MCB for the lighting circuit in the garage if you want to future proof it. Or you can just supply the single light from the original lighting circuit from the consumer unit. Cutting the cable leaving the consumer unit and adding a junction box supplying the garage light can be done too.

You'll need a one gang switch if you wish to control one light, if you want to control another with the same switch then a two gang will be needed.
