Hiya,

We have a light fitting in the kitchen where we live that takes 4 x GU10 bulbs. The fitting states 20w max per bulb.

I was thinking of replacing them with some LED bulbs instead, but the 20w never really seemed bright enough for the room. Would going for a higher rating, say 40w (equivalent) using < 3w actual power be ok? I'm assuming the rating specified on the fitting is for the power being used, not the light output but just wanted to check before I set something on fire :)

Yep, you're spot on. The label describes the size of internal wiring used and, usually more importantly, the amount of heat the fitting can dissipate without becoming too hot for safety.
